Less than 1% of websites meet or surpass Google best practice for search engine optimization; as a result, your SEO vendor should spend the first few months updating the site to meet Google best practice. This work usually requires a website developer, especially when you’re optimizing the site for load speed.
- Your SEO Program should have a consistent and ongoing Content Plan.
Consumers use search engines to find answers, so content is king. Your website needs to be a tool to provide answers (in the form of content) for your costumers. If you want to rank for a search term (keyword), your website has to have content targeting that search term. In most cases, businesses do not have enough content on their website and do not focus their content on what customers are looking for. Content also plays a considerable role in your backlink strategy. If your SEO program doesn’t come with a content plan, it won’t work. Run.
- Your SEO Program should include an effort to clean up your local business listings, especially in the early months.
If you have an established SEO plan, part of the plan should be focused on cleaning up existing local business listings and/or gaining additional local business listings (Google My Business, Infogroup, WhitePages, LinkedIn, etc). Be warned: there are some relatively inexpensive services (such as MOZ or Yext) that can help you do this without your SEO vendor.
